At the Scene of the Accident

Aug 22, 02:26 PM

• Signal your warning lights in order to alert other drivers that your car is temporarily inoperative.

• Remain calm. Try to calm others if necessary.

• If someone has been injured, call the police immediately. Ask them to call an ambulance.

• Identify yourself. Show your driver’s license and vehicle registration. DO NOT debate the accident or admit fault. Most accidents with injuries or property damage will need to be reported to the police.

• Show proof of insurance to the attending officer. The attending officer will verify if your car is drivable. If your car is not drivable, remove all your personal belongings from your vehicle. Check your glove box for things such as CDs, stereo cassettes, cell phone, keys, wallet, garage door opener, etc.

• Inquire as to where your vehicle is being towed. Never allow anyone to suggest a repair shop to you. This decision is only yours.
